Artificial flowers are made from different materials, and each material has its own advantages.

For wedding and event decorations, there is no single “best” material. The right choice depends on appearance, durability, weight, application and budget.

Here are the most common artificial flower materials.

1. Polyester Fabric

Polyester fabric is one of the most commonly used materials for artificial wedding flowers, including roses, hydrangeas, peonies and orchids.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Wide range of colors
  • Good visual appearance
  • Cost-effective
  • Suitable for large floral installations

Cons:

  • Less realistic to the touch than Real Touch flowers
  • Petals may crease during packing and transportation

Best for: Wedding arches, flower walls, centerpieces, aisle flowers and bouquets.

Note: Many products marketed as “silk flowers” today are actually made from polyester or other synthetic fabrics rather than natural silk.

2. Plastic / PE

Plastic and PE are commonly used for artificial greenery, eucalyptus, leaves, stems and filler plants.

Pros:

  • Durable
  • Holds its shape well
  • Easy to clean
  • Good for repeated use

Cons:

  • Lower-quality plastic can look less natural
  • Usually feels harder than fabric flowers

Best for: Greenery arches, foliage walls, leaves and mixed floral arrangements.

3. PU / Real Touch

PU is often used for premium Real Touch artificial flowers, designed to imitate the soft texture of fresh petals.

Pros:

  • Very realistic appearance
  • Soft, natural touch
  • Excellent for close-up decoration

Cons:

  • Higher price
  • Usually heavier than fabric flowers
  • Less economical for very large installations

Best for: Bridal bouquets, luxury centerpieces, premium weddings and close-up displays.

Latex is another soft-touch material used for realistic artificial flowers and leaves.

Pros: Soft, flexible and realistic.

Cons: More expensive than standard fabric flowers and requires better storage conditions.

Best for: Premium arrangements and decorative flowers viewed at close range.

5. Foam / EVA

Foam and EVA are lightweight materials that can be easily shaped into different flower forms.

Pros:

  • Very lightweight
  • Easy to shape
  • Cost-effective
  • Good for oversized flowers

Cons:

  • Less realistic at close range
  • Can be crushed during transportation

Best for: Giant flowers, stage decorations, displays and creative installations.

Why Flower Walls & Arches Often Use Mixed Materials

For large decorations such as flower walls, wedding arches and event backdrops, using only one type of flower or material is not always the best solution.

Professional designs often combine different artificial flowers and greenery, for example:

Polyester roses + fabric hydrangeas + orchids + PE eucalyptus + plastic greenery

This creates more variation in color, texture, flower size and depth, making the overall arrangement look fuller and more natural.

Mixed materials can also help balance:

Realism + Durability + Weight + Cost

For example, a wedding arch does not necessarily need expensive Real Touch flowers throughout. Fabric flowers can form the main arrangement, PE greenery can add volume and structure, while premium flowers can be added as focal points.
